About
Trans Melbourne Gender Project (TMGP) is a coalition of people of all genders. We are based in Melbourne, Australia. We might be men, women, transgendered, transsexual, intersex, gender-queer, MTF, FTM, queer, or none of the above. We want to be able to freely embody the gender we feel we are.
Our activities span the areas of:
- community: we meet in person and online
- support: we hold monthly support meetings about gender-related issues
- activism: we run a range of gender projects that involve activities such as creating resources, doing advocacy, and holding events.
If you’re interested in any of these activities or you want to add your own ideas, we’d love to hear from you. The more people who participate, the better.
Trans-Mission statement
We come together not because of what we are, but what we want. What we want is open to definition – and we are open about definitions. We are interested in making spaces where the meanings of gender, politics, identity, and desire are not pre-defined.
Interests and hobbies
Some of our interests include:
- creatively resisting violence against people who don’t fit the law that everyone should live the gender assigned to them at birth
- creating stronger coalitions between the different people who make up the ‘trans’ and ‘intersex’ populations
- respecting our differences of background, need, and opinion
- being visible in all our diversity.
Some of our current and future hobbies involve setting up some or all of the following:
- information and resources for people who need trans-friendly medical help, counselling, support services and welfare
- political campaigns or actions around issues relevant to gender freedom (e.g. changes to birth certificate legislation in Victoria, or any gender-related injustice)
- education campaigns to teach people in positions of power how to respect and support the needs of differently-gendered folk
- social events (e.g. film screenings)
- services targeted to helping particularly vulnerable differently-gendered folk, especially young people and people without financial security.
